Morpeth Rugby Club ensured their trip from Northumberland wasn't a wasted one as they triumphed in the fourth Heineken 10's rugby festival, held at Novocastrians Rugby Club on 16th May.
The well drilled outfit looked a class act throughout the competition and romped to a deserved victory in torrential rain at Sutherland Park with the Mighty Peth team overcoming Gosforth in a closely fought final. In the plate competition Ponteland RFC had supporters on the edge of their seats in a spectacular with plenty of free flowing rugbymaking it a deserving win.
Andy Leonard & Graham Ward tournament organisers at host Novocastrians RFC, said: "The day was wonderful and everybody that has attended whether it was to play or to watch has thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We are proud to have hosted this event. Thank you very much to Heineken for their sponsorship we really hope that we can host a Heineken 10's event next year."
Paul Jackson, winning captain said: "We all had a brilliant day; it's been lots of fun with some really good rugby played by competing teams. The event has been extremely well organised and hopefully there will be plenty more Heineken 10's tournaments to come."
By winning the fourth Heineken 10's festival, Morpeth RFC automatically go into the hat to become eligible for the Heineken legacy donation, which will be awarded to one of the victorious clubs at the completion of all of the Heineken 10's festivals in 2009.
Following a successful inaugural year of the first ever national 10's rugby competition in 2008, the Heineken 10's returns bigger and better in 2009. With 15 tournaments hosted at rugby clubs nationwide between May and September, this is the first ever social rugby tens tournament of its kind. It promises to attract even more amateur rugby players - with over 2500 taking part in 2009.
