Morton Wins Unsing Hero Award

Morton's recognition was for both rugby and soccer, as he combines his role at the Falcons with director of football duties at Newcastle Blue Star FC in a long and distinguished round-ball career.
Falcons colleague Steve Black handed over Morton's prize on the night, while Sport Newcastle Chairman Ian Elvin said the contribution of volunteers is vital to the continuity and vibrance of local sport.

"Tonight was a chance to honour some of the people who have dedicated the majority of their lives and spare time to sport and often the development of youngsters in that sport," said Elvin.

Gosforth RFC president Malcolm Stokoe also picked up an award for his dedication to the Newcastle club.

Rising to first team captain at the age of 20, Stokoe joined the committee while still lacing up his boots before managing the colts side.

Now also Northumberland U20s secretary and RFU student liaison officer, he said: "It's fantastic to receive something like this.

"I've only ever done what I have through a love of rugby and a desire to help others enjoy their love of the same sport."
