The Irish Rugby Football Union and Munster Rugby are delighted to confirm that out half Ronan O'Gara has signed a new four years contract with Munster and Ireland rugby.
It means that O'Gara will continue to play in Ireland until the end of season 2010 / 2011, the same period as recently committed by the Leinster and Ireland captain Brian O'Driscoll.
The agreement with O'Driscoll and O'Gara are part of the ongoing contractual negotiations by the IRFU, led by Director of Human Resources Maurice Dowling, with Irish international and provincial players.
O'Gara is one of the top performers in the history of the Heineken Cup with two ERC Elite awards for having more than 50 Heineken Cup caps and scoring more than 500 points in Europe's premier club rugby competition.
The out-half's record tally of 786 points in the Heineken Cup is streaks ahead of his counterparts with the second highest points scorer in the tournament, Diego Dominquez, trailing O'Gara by over 140 points. With 61 caps to his credit, he currently lies in an impressive place for the most capped player in Europe's premier club rugby tournament.
Ronan O'Gara said: "I am delighted to commit to Munster and Ireland for the next four years as I feel there is a special bond between this group of players. The support and loyalty of the Munster supporters was obviously a big factor in reaching my decision. I really look forward to working towards further success with Munster and to Ireland reaching new goals on the international scene."
Munster Chief Executive Garrett Fitzgerald, said: "Obviously I am delighted that the negotiations have been concluded and I am particularly pleased that this new deal will see Ronan remain in Irish rugby for at least the next four years. I believe it says a lot about the structure and confidence there is in the game in this country that a player of Ronan's calibre is happy to continue his career here."
