Confident Cardiff Blue Nicky Robinson told www.wru.co.uk that his side can continue last year's fine form as they prepare for the new season.
The six-foot fly half, whose consistently high performances helped the Blues to their highest ever Celtic League finish last year, securing top Welsh seed for the Heineken, and is hoping his side can continue to build and develop thanks to some astute trading in the transfer market.
"We've got a stronger squad than last year who can really play some rugby," he said, referring to the likes of Taufa'ao Filise (Bath), Gary Powell (Gloucester), Ben Blair (Canterbury), Scott Morgan (Leeds Tykes), who have all been captured over the summer.
"It's a very exciting season ahead," he said.
"We did quite well in the Celtic League last season to finish fourth as the top Welsh region and that will be our aim again. But we also want to improve, especially in the Heineken Cup.
"People say we have got a tough pool in Europe with both Munster and Leicester as well as Bourgoin but I think it's a great group. You want to be playing against the top sides and as players, you want to be involved in the big occasions and they don't get much bigger than Leicester and Munster in Europe.
Cardiff Blues kick off their Heineken Cup season in Pool 4 on Saturday 21 October away to French side Bourgoin.
