All Black legend Jonah Lomu has been named in the Cardiff Blues' starting lineup for the Pool 2 match against Calvisano.
The 30-year-old veteran of 63 caps and 37 Test tries for New Zealand says running on to the 3,000-capacity San Michele ground will be the first step in his bid to return to the New Zealand Test team.
"I'm really eager to get out there and get started," Lomu said. "I'm confident and looking forward to rubbing shoulders with some quality players in the Blues side. I think I've earned the right to be in the team.
"This is a step in the direction I needed to go in. This is an opportunity to do something I love with a passion. I've been training for six months, and I'm glad to be given the chance to repay the coaching staff's faith in me."
Young said Lomu was in the starting lineup purely on merit.
"He's earned this chance," said the former Wales prop. "He's been completely committed at training and he's jumped over a lot of hurdles to get to this stage.
"He gives us a different dimension on attack."
In other changes to the Blues squad, former All Black backrower Xavier Rush returns from shoulder injury and Wales prop Gethin Jenkins has been named on the bench in what may be his first appearance since the British Lions tour of New Zealand in the summer.
