Steve Bates believes Border Reivers can prove successful travellers when they go to Brive on Saturday in search of the double following their 25-22 win over the 1997 Heineken Cup winners in Round 3 of the European Challenge Cup.
Border Reivers are second behind Pool 4 leaders Newcastle Falcons in the chase for quarter-final qualification and Bates accepts his Scottish side cannot let the five-point gap get any bigger.
"I have to say that I am pleased with the way we played last weekend against Brive," said Bates.
"The guys created four or five good scoring opportunities which we didn't convert and so, despite the score, which maybe flattered Brive a bit, we played some very good, positive rugby.
"Having said that, I don't want to take anything away from the Brive performance. They scored four very good tries, mostly through their backs, and played a good game of rugby.
"We have a very positive attitude towards the away leg. There is still everything to play for and we are hoping to be able to make a few changes for the away leg.
"We are well aware of Brive's home record and we have a couple of guys I'm hoping to be able to bring back after injuries so, hopefully, we should be able to put up an even better performance this week.
"And, despite Brive's reputation, the match was less physical than we perhaps expected and that has given the guys more confidence.
"We have been working through the last week or so at trying to attack the line in a more positive way and I'm proud of the way the team played last week.
"However, I think that looking at winning the tournament may be a bit ambitious for us this year as there is still a lot of development the team needs to go through.
"But we have managed to achieve a good position in the table and it would be fantastic for us to make it through to the knock-out stages.
"If we can put in a good performance away against Brive and really put it in to hold off Newcastle, then we are in with a decent shout for qualification.
"Having said that, we are really enjoying just playing European rugby and this has been a fantastic experience for us.
"I am very much looking forward to travelling down to Brive, visiting the place and experiencing the French style of rugby as they play it at home."
