Northampton Saints wing Wylie Human will be out of action for the rest of the season after he suffered ligament damage to his ring finger on his left hand.
The South African suffered the injury during Saturday's victory over Gloucester and after seeing a specialist today will have an operation on Friday to correct the damage.
The injury will keep him out of action when the Saints face Toulouse in the Heineken Cup quarter-final in April.
Meanwhile Saints have rewarded Simon Emms with a two-year contract after proving his worth since he arrived at the club before Christmas.
The 30-year-old prop has made eight appearances for Saints - including seven starts - since his debut against Bedford Blues in this season's Powergen Cup.
Emms was drafted into the squad when Saints lost both Tom Smith and Robbie Kempson to injury.
At the time, the 30-year-old was working in London as a chartered surveyor and playing part-time for London Welsh when he received the call from Saints. Emms had all but given up on his professional rugby career after leaving Rotherham at the start of the season.
Emms had moved into Division One after an ankle injury had marked the end of his three-year contract at Bath. He played for Orrell for a whole season to prove his fitness and since leaving Orrell for Rotherham, Emms has played also played for Gloucester.
He said: "This all came about as a bit of a blessing. When I came here, I thought it was my chance to get back into the Premiership since my injury. Thankfully it has gone well for me. I have been made to feel really welcome and I have thoroughly enjoyed it."
Emms began his career with his home club Llandovery before seeing Bristol into the Premiership before fulfilling a lifelong ambition to play for the Welsh giants Llanelli.
Head coach Budge Pountney said: "Simon has made the most of his opportunity and has brought a sparkle to the team that we wanted to reward. He is a player that does not take a backward step and it is not in his nature to sit back and let things happen around him. He likes to force the issue at all times."
Lock Matt Lord has also signed an extension to his contract. The New Zealander had one year left on his current contract and that has been extended by another year until the end of the 2006/07 season.
Pountney said: "Lordy is a fantastic player both on and off the pitch, and has been a vital part of our squad for the past few seasons. The only thing we have any doubts about is his hair do!"
