Sale Sharks match winner Charlie Hodgson paid tribute to his retiring half-back partner Bryan Redpath after steering his side to only their second title in 144 years.
Just as in 2002, when Sale beat Pontypridd to capture the European Challenge Cup fir the first time, the England outside half was the key man in victory.
He scored ten points three years ago and grabbed two tries in a 17 point salvo this time to provide a winning end to his five-year partnership with ex Scottish international Redpath.
"It was a fitting end to the season and a great send off for Bryan," said Hodgson.
"It's been great playing with him and I wish him all the best in his retirement.
"This is good preparation for all five of us who are going with the Lions. I'm feeling confident with the way I am playing at the moment and I hope I can give Clive Woodward a few selection problems in New Zealand.
"There has been a lot of talk about Stephen Jonny Wilkinson being the top choices for the Lions number 10 shirt, but hopefully I can give him a few selection headaches.
"Today was a great day, and hugely satisfying. At the start of the season we aimed to win some silverware, and that's exactly what we've done."
