Leicester Tigers have bolstered their front row resources ahead of next season with the signing of Argentinean-born powerhouse Alejandro Moreno
Moreno, 32, will join Tigers in 2005/06 from French club Brive, having previously enjoyed a stint at Perpignan.
Moreno - who played test rugby for Argentina before switching his allegiance to Italy - is comfortable at both loosehead and tighthead prop as well as at hooker, bringing a wealth of experience and versatility to Tigers. His preferred position is tighthead, however.
"He's big and strong," enthused Tigers forwards coach Richard Cockerill. "We're going to be without Graham Rowntree and Julian White, who are on the Lions tour, and possibly even Darren Morris, so we need adequate front row cover. Dave Young is a good young prop and so too Michael Holford, whilst John Rawson is only 28 years old. The front row is one area where you need strength in depth."
Pat Howard, who will take over from John Wells as head coach next season, echoed Cockerill's sentiments: "It's important that we have at least 30 players capable of playing Heineken Cup rugby next season. As it is we already have three international props on our books; Alejandro will give us even more depth."
Moreno - who played at Welford Road, for Italy, during the 1999 World Cup - will report for pre-season training in July. He last played for the Azzurri in the 2002 RBS Six Nations, having won his three Argentina caps during the 1998 South American Championship.
Originally plying his trade with the San Fernando club in Buenos Aires, Alejandro joined Agen in 1999. He then moved to Worcester in the summer of 2001, spending one season in English National Division One. Two seasons in Perpignan followed his stint with Worcester, during which time he was a bench replacement for the French Championship Final of 2004 in which Perpignan lost to Stade Francais.
Alejandro has made 13 appearances for Brive, in France's Top 16 and the European Challenge Cup, this season.
