Rhys Williams will captain Cardiff Blues against Viadana in Brescia on Sunday (18.00) in the play-off match that will decide the 24th and final place in next season's Heineken Cup.
The versatile Wales back leads the side in the absence of British & Irish Lions tourist Martyn Williams. The Blues will also be without fellow Lions prop Gethin Jenkins and centre Tom Shanklin.
The Blues have been given the chance to qualify for European club rugby's premier tournament as the highest finishing team in the Celtic League who did not automatically qualify for the Heineken Cup while Viadana have their chance thanks to finishing third in the Italian Super 10 competition.
"Training has gone well over the last few days and we are clear about what we have to do. It's about making sure we're in the Heineken Cup next season," said Williams.
