Bryan Redpath has twice lifted the European Challenge Cup as a player - and he is intent on making the same sort of impact on the tournament as a coach.
The former Scotland scrum half has launched his coaching career at Gloucester this season after choosing to move to Kingsholm and join forces with Dean Ryan.
Ryan remains as head coach following the departure at the end of last season of director of rugby Nigel Melville and he will now have the 60-times capped scrum half as his backs coach.
Redpath captained Sale Sharks to European Challenge Cup glory in 2002 when they beat Pontypridd 25-22 in Oxford and was again at the base of the Sale scrum when they triumphed 27-3 over Pau at the same Kassam Stadium in May.
"Everyone wants to be in the Heineken Cup, but Gloucester didn't qualify for next season and we will give it our best shot in the European Challenge Cup," said Redpath.
"The Premiership is key for us, but we also want to be successful in Europe. There are a number of extremely strong teams in the tournament and, having won it twice with Sale, I know how great it can be in building momentum.
"This offer from Gloucester came out of the blue, it all happened very quickly. I was ambitious as a player and this is the right opportunity at the right time and I intend to be equally ambitious as a coach."
Head coach Ryan said of Redpath: "He's had one of the sharpest brains in the Premiership in recent years."
