ASM Clermont Auvergne's Welsh wizard Stephen Jones may miss their Pool 3 opener against Leicester Tigers.
The 27 year old suffered a double ankle sprain in the 69th minute of his side's 9-0 loss to Heineken Cup Pool 4 side Biarritz Olympique in the Top 14 French championship at the weekend.
Clermont, who are returning to the Heineken Cup after a two year absence, hope that the Grand Slam winner will be back for their Heineken Cup Round 2 match at home to Ospreys on Sunday, 30 October.
Jones is an ERC Elite Award winner for scoring more than 500 points in the Heineken Cup in 48 appearances with Llanelli Scarlets. The third highest scorer in the tournament's history, Jones has scored an impressive 5 tries, 57 conversions, 134 penalties and 3 drop goals in the the Heineken Cup for Scarlets and Clermont will be hoping he will continue his prolific scoring wearing the blue and yellow.
