Chris Paterson led Edinburgh Gunners to a dramatic Pool 6 victory over 2004 Heineken Cup champions London Wasps in Round 1 – and now wants his team to take that never-say-die form on the road when they tackle Llanelli Scarlets at Stradey Park on Saturday.
“We will certainly be wary of a Scarlets backlash after their defeat at Toulouse – the Scarlets have such a proud Heineken Cup record and Stradey Park becomes a very special place when European rugby is played there. It is a massive challenge for us,” said Paterson, who scored 22 of the Gunners’ points in their 32-31 triumph.
“This group is so tight that you simply have to win your home games and we have started with a big one against Wasps but we will re-assess the position after playing the Scarlets.
“They will miss Simon Easterby, he is a class player, but they play a brilliant style of rugby with loads of dangerous players to suit their wide game. It should be an exciting match.
“We won at Stradey in the opening game of this season’s Celtic League but it was only by a point and the Heineken Cup is a different proposition altogether.
“On top of that we have only got a six-day turnaround but we will take a lot of confidence out of the win over Wasps. We showed an enormous amount of self belief – we had to win the game three times over – as well as courage and spirit and I was delighted with the way we controlled the ball and dictated the pace of the game in difficult conditions.”
