Dragons coach Chris Anderson says he’s not scared of England hero Jonny Wilkinson ahead of Saturday’s Heineken Cup clash against Newcastle.
The World Cup-winning league coach goes head to head with the World Cup-winning union fly-half at the Dragons’ Rodney Parade fortress, but Anderson isn’t getting carried away by Wilkinson’s reputation.
"He looks a good player, but I’ve never seen him play live, so we’ll have to wait and see what he does on Saturday," said Anderson, who coached Australia to the World Cup title at Old Trafford in 2000.
"He’s one of the best players in the world, but we’re not targeting him. We’ll try to beat them in the other areas and not give him the time and space he needs.
"He’s been a marked player since the World Cup, but I think it’s more a case of not giving him any opportunities."
The Dragons go into the match on the back of a good run of form that has taken them into second place in the Celtic League.
"We’re playing some good footy and we’ve got a bit of momentum going, but this match will tell us where we are as a squad.
"Our skill level is right up there with the England clubs - there’s no doubt about that - and this match will be a good indication of where Welsh rugby is and of where English rugby is.
"I like some of the rugby in the Zurich Premiership - London Wasps try to keep the ball alive and they play a good brand of rugby."
The Falcons can boast Wilkinson and former Wales captain Colin Charvis, but Anderson will look to Springbok star Percy Montgomery to fire the Dragons on Saturday.
"Percy’s a great player," he said. "He’s a real asset to the club because of his ability and his professional attitude."
