Sale Sharks' Jason Robinson
Robinson Sets Sights On Trophy
18 October 2004, 2:01 pm
Sale Sharks won the tournament in 2002 with Robinson starring at full back in a 25-22 thriller against Pontypridd at the Kassam Stadium and now the new Sharks captain is set on a repeat.
“When we won the title in 2002 – our first bit of silverware in our 141-year history – that really put Sale Sharks on the map,” said the Lions and England ace.
“Everything we have achieved since then has kicked on from that day. We want to win the trophy again, we are deadly serious about the tournament.
“Of course we are disappointed we did not qualify for the Heineken Cup but as the European Challenge Cup tournament progresses so does the level of competition progress. Just look at some of the sides like Agen, Clermont Auvergne, Brive, London Irish and Saracens and you can see there are plenty of class teams around.
“What we are looking to do is emulate London Wasps. In 2003 they won the European Challenge Cup and 12 months later they lifted the Heineken Cup.”
Catania, who qualified for the tournament as Italian Series A Champions, are among the 14 unseeded teams who will have home advantage in the First Leg of Round 1 with the Second Leg matches played on 29 / 30 / 31 October.
