Uncertainty Inspires Sweeney
13 January 2004, 1:44 pm
Celtic Warrior Ceri Sweeney has revealed how the talk of merger inspired the boys from the Valleys to their Euro giant-killing against Wasps.

The region's future was thrown into doubt by speculation of a merger with rivals Cardiff Blues just days before Sunday's clash.

That was all the motivation the Warriors needed when they faced mega-rich Wasps.

And after Cardiff had lost their 10th successive game in Europe, the Warriors claimed the head of England's aristocrats.

"Last week was tough on the players as we went through all of this uncertainty last season," said match-winner Sweeney.

"We all saw friends that we had played alongside for years face the prospect of not having a club or even ending up the dole. It was very worrying.

"But it's out of our hands and we knew that all we could do as a team is put in a performance like we did. I don't think anyone could have asked for more.

"It was a huge game for us and a big scalp to claim. Wasps are a formidable side and every single one of us was shattered after the game but well worth it.

"The most important thing was the spirit we showed. It was backs to the wall stuff at times but we pulled together and showed that we could dig in.

"Every week we are building a stronger team spirit and we all felt that a performance like that was coming."

Sweeney reported in for duty with the rest of the provisional Six Nations training squad yesterday for the first time since returning home from the World Cup.

And a hat-trick of Welsh victories in Europe over the weekend gave the squad the perfect boost.
Sweeney added: "Everyone was very happy that we had beaten an English side but it was a very good weekend for Wales with the Dragons and Llanelli both winning as well.

"Hopefully we can all take it on again this weekend."
