John Smit will become the third Rugby World Cup winning captain to play in the Heineken Cup when he makes his Pool 5 debut for ASM Clermont Auvergne, last season's European Challenge Cup winners and 2007 French Championship finalists.
Smit will be following in the illustrious footsteps of fellow Springbok Francois Pienaar (1995) and England's Martin Johnson (2003).
The South African hooker will be one of two players from the winning 22-man match day squad at Stade de France competing in European club rugby's elite tournament this season.
The other is match winning full back Percy Montgomery - the RWC 2007 leading points scorer - who returns to the Heineken Cup with Perpignan two years after making a total of 12 tournament appearances with Newport Gwent Dragons.
A total of 38 RWC winners have so far played in the Heineken Cup since its launch in 1995 and Smit, along with the Wallabies' 1999 replacement hooker Jeremy Paul, who has joined Gloucester Rugby, is set to take that tally to 40.
