All Blacks star Byron Kelleher is all set to make his Heineken Cup debut for Toulouse at home against Leinster in Round 2.
Toulouse coach Guy Noves was keen to give his new scrum-half signing a chance to get an early taste of the French Championship following his arrival after the Rugby World Cup, but he is keen to balance the demands on his new Kiwi and fellow Test No 9 jean-Baptiste Elissalde.
"We wanted to get Byron straight into the squad and onto the pitch, particularly as Jean-Baptiste had a week less of rest after the World Cup," explained Noves.
"We are trying to balance the needs of all of the players. That's why Jean-Baptiste started at 10 and Byron at 9 in one game.
"Elissalde will be in for the Edinburgh game and we will bring Byron back in for the match against Leinster.
"There has been a lot of talk about potential friction between Elissalde and Kelleher but, with the World Cup this year and the Six Nations in 2008, we need flexibility in terms of covering positions. Both players understand the situation and will do whatever is necessary for the team, whether they are asked to play at No 9, No 10 or on the bench.
"Toulouse has never been a club where personalities are more important than the team and Byron has come to the club with exactly the right attitude."
Also missing for the tricky trip to Edinburgh, where Toulouse won the Heineken Cup for a record third time in 2004, will be France's most capped player, Fabien Pelous and Argentine prop Omar Hasan.
"We want to go as far as we can in this competition. It's as an important competition for all of the French clubs and one which bridges the gap between domestic and international rugby," said Noves.
"It's an important opportunity for the teams to play against the best clubs in Europe and, although we have got a very difficult pool, winning the competition has to be the aim."
