Simon Easterby says his Llanelli Scarlets side are 'hurting like hell' after their Heineken Cup whitewash.
The Scarlets slumped to their sixth successive defeat and finished without a single point in Pool Five as Clermont scored six tries in a deserved win.
And Easterby reckons last season's semi-finalists were just not good enough to compete with the likes of Clermont, Munster and London Wasps in Europe's premier tournament.
Easterby said: "We haven't produced this season. At times our application has let us down and it was a real disappointment.
"It's hurting like hell at the moment but we will be a better side next season."
"We wanted to produce a performance and get a victory but it wasn't the case.
"Clermont brought a very strong side and played some good rugby. We can use excuses but the bottom line is we haven't been good enough.
"That's been the difference between this season and last. Things went our way last year and they haven't this time around.
"We've been fortunate to get to the knock out stages on a number of occasions before and now we'll come back stronger and better from this experience.
