New Zealand winger Doug Howlett, who has already scored six tries in the World Cup, is just one of the new stars set for action in Pool 5.
Reigning champions London Wasps could well meet one of their 2007 Heineken Cup heroes when they clash with ASM Clermont Auvergne in the back-to-back matches in Rounds 3 and 4. England outside half Alex King - so far the only player who has represented Wasps to make 50 Heineken Cup appearances - has joined the French club and could face his old team-mates in December.
King, who scored 294 Heineken Cup points for Wasps in a career that saw him win two Heineken Cup and one European Challenge Cup winners medals, will join South African captain and hooker John Smit and Springbok centre Marius Joubert at Parc des Sports Marcel-Michelin, along with
French stars Julien Bonnaire and Benoit Baby, who have switched from Bourgoin and Toulouse respectively. Joubert was one of the five finalists for the 2004 IRB Player of the Year Award.Wasps, who launch their title defence at home to 2006 champions Munster, have signed three front row forwards - props Pat Barnard and Michael Holford and hooker James Buckland, the latter on the Leicester Tigers bench in the Heineken Cup final last May, while outside half Ricky Flutey has joined from London Irish.
Along with Howlett who will move to Limerick in January, Munster have recruited international centre Kieran Lewis from Leinster and attracted outside half Paul Warwick from Connacht. Young Leinster back rower Niall Ronan has also headed south, while the New Zealand Maori captain and centre Rua Tipoki has arrived from down under.
Llanelli Scarlets have beefed up their pack options by recruiting two front row internationals and an experienced lock. Adam Eustace will arrive at Stradey Park with a European Challenge Cup winners' medal and 24 Heineken Cup appearances from his days at Gloucester. Wales prop Ben Broster has joined from Saracens, while Scottish cap Bruce Douglas has left the Borders to come to Wales.
