The Scotland wing was carried off during his side's 21-10 Magners League victory over Munster after taking a blow to the knee.
Paterson scored a try in the victory over the defending Heineken Cup holders, before being carried off in the 54th minute at Thomond Park.
Doctors must wait for the swelling for subside before undertaking a scan to reveal the full extent of the injury.
An Edinburgh spokesperson was tight lipped on Paterson's prognosis saying, "we are waiting for Chris's injury to settle and he will be assessed."
And With the autumn Test series only three weeks away Scotland coach Frank Hadden will also be eagerly awaiting news on his 61-times capped wing and No 1 goal-kicker.
