Dean Schofield will captain Sale Sharks at the start of next season, taking over from Jason Robinson who has retired.
Schofield, recently capped by England in South Africa, made his debut for Sale Sharks v Roma in 2001 and has played over 100 games for the club, including 32 caps at European level.
Schifield featured in the 2005 European Challenge Cup final when the Sharks defeated Section Palaoise 27-3 to claim the European title.
The 27 year-old lock said, "I am delighted to be given this opportunity by Philippe. We need to get back to basics after our low league placing last season. We all need to have a workmanlike attitude on the field and work together to improve."
Director of Rugby Philippe Saint Andre said, " Dean is well respected by everyone at the club and I am sure he will be a good leader for my team. He is a tough player who never fails to give 100% and is just what we need for the start of the new season."
Sale Sharks will face French teams Bayonne and Montpellier and Italian side Petrarca Padova in Pool 4 of the European Challenge Cup, when European club rugby action returns on November 9 2007.
