Munster and Ireland must wait till next week to find out whether or not their influential second row will be available for Six Nations and Heineken Cup action.
O'Connell sustained a shoulder injury in Ireland's Six Nations clash with France in the Stade de France on Saturday. Following a scan, the injury has been confirmed as a shoulder A/C joint strain which puts the former Lion in doubt for Ireland v Wales.
O'Connell will require rehabilitation over the next week, at which point a further assessment of the injury will be made by the Ireland management team.
Munster's Heineken Cup quarter-final will also be against French opposition when the Irish province host Perpignan on Saturday, 1 April at Lansdowne Road.
O'Connell, who has 31 international caps and 28 Heineken Cup games under his belt, would be a major loss for Ireland and Munster and Irish rugby fans will hope for good news next week.
