Mike Catt said his London Irish need to win the forwards battle if they are to defeat Perpignan in the Heineken Cup quarter-final on Saturday.
Irish and Perpignan are no strangers to each other after sharing one win apiece as they qualilfied as winners and runners up from Pool 1.
And Catt, who took on a coaching role this season, has studied Saturday's opposition and concluded the front eight match-up will be where the game is won.
"They are a very big side - physically we are going to have to match them to try and get parity, especially up front," Catt told BBC Radio 5 Live.
"We would like to move their big pack around, so when it comes to the set-piece, they are a little tired.
"We play pretty high-risk rugby and if it comes off it's fantastic stuff."
The two teams met twice this season in Pool One in the opening stages of the competition, with each claiming a home victory.
But former England star Catt warned his side will need to maintain their discipline as Perpignan boast South Africa's World Cup-winning full-back Percy Montgomery as their place kicker.
"If you give him anything 40m or 50m out, he's going to kick it straight through the middle of the posts," said the 36-year-old.
The Exiles have the added incentive of a semi-final at Twickenham - against either Toulouse or Cardiff Blues - if they beat Perpignan.
