It was mission accomplished at Vicarage Road as far as Saracens coach Brendan Venter was concerned as his side avenged the 'rugby lesson' they received in Toulon earlier in the campaign.
"We knew we needed to score one more try than them and eight points more than them to give us a chance of going through to the quarter-finals," said Venter.
"Now we have to go to Rovigo and get five points and hope they don't do the same against Castres next week. We can still go through and I'd be really proud of my team if they can do that from what was a very tough Pool.
"We weren't realistically going to get a bonus point against a side like Toulon. They are a good side with a massive budget and a host of world class players.
"But we did what we had to do and it was important for us to get things going again after those defeats by London Irish and Leicester."
Toulon's director of rugby Philippe Saint Andre condemned the 80 minutes as "a poor game of rugby on a wet Thursday night" and blamed his side's heavy defeat for 10 minutes of madness at the start of the second half.
"We had nine consecutive penalties and two yellow cards in the 10 minutes after the break," said Saint Andre.
"It was boring rugby in the first-half and we lost the plot for 10 minutes at the start of the second half. I'm not pleased and now we must win with a bonus point next week to be sure of going through."
