Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-finalists London Wasps have released Lee Smith, just four months into a four-year deal.
Wasps will play a home tie against Gloucester on April 11 without the internationally capped rugby league man.
Smith is the latest in a long line of rugby league stars to admit defeat in a bid to make it in union.
The player had hoped to cross codes successfully at Wasps, and bring European silverware to Adams Park for the first time since 2007.
But Smith has failed to settle and played no part in Wasps' qualification to the quarter-finals of the second tier European competition.
Smith, 23, who just two senior appearances in the 15-man code, having been a headline performer for the Rhinos last year and earning England recognition.
Smith has re-joined Leeds Rhinos and set to play for the Super League champions against Bradford tomorrow night. A Wasps statement had said that he was returning to Leeds to be closer to his family.
