Geordan Crane
Heineken man of the match Geordan Crane celebrates at the final whistle
Match report
Leicester Tigers closed the gap on three-times champions Toulouse at the top of Pool 6 as they became the first team to beat the Frenchmen this season.

It means the expected full house of 37,000 at Le Stadium in Toulouse can expect another mighty match as the action heats up midway through the Pool campaign.

A mistake in defence by French full back Clement Poitrenaud after 11 minutes gave the home side the advantage as his loose pass on the 22 was snapped up by Ollie Smith who scored the only try of the game.

That score wiped out the early penalty from Valentin Courrent that had given a confident looking Toulouse side an early lead. By the break
Goode had added a penalty and Courrent a drop goal and there was very little between the two sides.

The Toulouse scrum was strong, but the home line-out took a number of balls against the throw as Goode's massive punting kept the Tigers ahead in the battle for territory.

A second penalty from Courrent two minutes after the break put the visitors back in front, but Goode was on target again after 54 and 72 minutes to edge Tigers ahead once more.

There was hope for Toulouse in the closing minutes when Vincent Clerc looked as though he had raced behind the posts for a try, but Welsh referee Nigel Owens spotted a forward pass and ruled out the score.

A Heineken Cup record crowd of 17,498 at Welford Road saw the result go down to the fifth minute of injury time, but Toulouse were unable to claw back their deficit.

They did secure a losing bonus point, however, which leaves them at the top of the Pool by a single point from the Tigers. That means next week's return game in France could be critical to the outcome of the Pool.
