Match report
Leinster took another giant step towards defending their Heineken Cup crown as they came from behind to beat ASM Clermont Auvergne 29-28 in an incredible European quarter-final at a packed RDS in Dublin.

Clermont would surely have won the game had outside half Brock James been on target with his penalties and drop goals, but he missed with five kicks and goal and with three
drop goals. On top of that his half-back partner Morgan Parra also missed with a kick.

The visitors did managed to scolre three tries, all by French wing Julien Malzieu, but the boot of Jonny Sexton punished them as he hit the mark with seven from eight.

Clermont went off at a rare old pace and dominated possession and territory in the opening exchanges, offloading superbly in the tackle and trying the keep the ball alive at every opportunity.

Two cross kicks from Brock James for his skipper Aurelien Rougerie put the Leinster defence under huge pressure and it was no surprise when French international wing Julien Malzieu rewarded the visitors' pressure with a try half-way out on the left.

James added the conversion and then kicked a penalty that gave his side a 10 point lead with only 16 minutes played. The champions were on the rack and had hardly had a sniff of the ball in the Clermont half.

They desperately needed a spark and it was provided by their South African prop CJ van der Linde. He picked up a loose ball near half-way and charged forward to provide a bridgehead in Clermont territory.

Moments later Jonny Sexton was lining up a penalty in front of the posts and no sooner had Leinster registered their opening points than the capacity 20,000 crowd was able to rest easier in their seats.

Not that the 3,000 Clermont fans eased up on their barrage of noise but, all of a sudden, they had less and less to shout about. As soon as they got onto the front foot, Leinster turned up the heat and some brilliant play from Brian O'Driscoll, who ran outside James and turned Rogerie inside out before offloading to Heaslip out the back door, led to the first home try.

No sooner had Heaslip got the ball on the Clermont 22 than he went haring towards the line, cutting inside French Grand Slam back row man Julien Bonnaire to cross for a cracking score.

Sexton used the left hand upright to steer his kick over and the scores were tied as the breathless game moved into the second quarter.

Now it was the champions who had the ascendancy and they pressed home their advantage. After two successive misses from James, a mistake by full back Anthony Floch in his 22, when he kicked directly to touch after taking the ball back in, gifted Leinster a lineout five metres out.

John Fogarty found Heaslip, van der Linde peeled around and popped the ball to Kevin McLauchlan and when he was held just short the quick ruck ball allowed Eoin Reddan to pop the ball to Heaslip who crashed over at the posts.

Sexton added the simple extra points and then completed a magnificent revival by landing a scruffy looking, but very important, 40 metre penalty that doubled their advantage at the break.

Clermont needed to start the second half with a bang and they did just that, using their massive pack to roll forward and eat up the metres. Just as they had done in the opening exchanges and, quick as a flash, Parra, James and co had sped the ball wide to the left to allow Malzieu to skip over for his second try.

The conversion failed to find the mark, but moments later James made it three from seven kicks at goal to cut the gap to two points. Game on again and on came the replacements as Clermont coach Vern Cotter freshened up his pack by introducing Alexandre Audebert and Julien Pierre.

As the pressure mounted, mistakes began to creep into play. Shane Horgan was the first to fall foul as he had his attempted clearance kick from just outside his 22 charged down by Marius Joubert.

The ball bounced into the hands of Malzieu and he weaved his way between three defenders and reached the line for his third try. This time James was on target and the lead was back in Clermont's hands.

Leinster opened up again and Rob Kearney was brought down on the line and video ref Geoff Warren was called into play to adjudge whether or not Reddan had dabbed down on the line. But while the home side didn't get the five points they wanted, they were given a penalty and Sexton's latest success cut the gap to two points.

The Irish outside half blotted his copybook moments later after Floch had been sent to the sin-bin for a deliberate knock on when he missed the target, but with seven minutes left to play he regained the lead with his seventh success from eight attempts to make it 29-28.

James had two golden opportunities to win the game in the final minutes, but he put his drop kicks wide and his side were left shattered, and beaten by the defending champions.
