Match report
Bath threw themselves a European lifeline as they held on to notch their first Heineken Cup victory of the season and set-up a cracking return with Edinburgh at Murrayfield this weekend.

It was the first time Bath had won in the Heineken Cup or their domestic league, the Guinness Premiership, since 18 September and their two first half tries paved the way for a notable triumph.

New South African recruit Luke Watson carried off the man of the match award on his Heineken Cup debut and his never-say-die attitude was at the heart of a spirited display that gives his side everything to play for in the final three rounds of Pool games.

Hooker Pieter Dixon, who came into the side at the last minute when England and British & Irish Lions hooker Lee Mears dro pped out with a virus, barged his way over in the right corner after only three minutes to give the home side the perfect start.

It had been good work from full back Nick Abendanon and wing Mike Stephenson that paved the way for the try, with outside half Nicky Little showing a lovely touch with his hands to give the final pass.

It was a Little penalty three minutes later that completed Bath's whirlwind start and left the Scottish side chasing the game.
Edinburgh skipper Chris Paterson chipped away at the lead with two penalties, but then Bath struck with a second try, this time from Stephenson, to regain control. A third Paterson penalty just before the break cut the lead to four points and there was everything to play for in the second half.

Edinburgh had a great chance through a Ben Cairns interception to grab the lead, but Abendanon ran down the international centre and saved the day. Bath also had their chances to add to their try count, but the defences remained on top.

A long range Little penalty eight minutes from time gave Bath a little bit more breathing space, but then gifted Edinburgh a golden chance to grab a draw on the stroke of time. Having held their line intact against a furious Edinburgh forward drive, and managed to turn them over at the vital time, skipper Michael Claassens dive passed the ball out of play.

Referee Alain Rolland quite rightly deemed it to be a deliberate act and awarded Edinburgh a penalty in front of the home posts. That led to a frantic final few minutes as the Scottish side threw everything at the home line.

They won two more penalties, coming within one more of a penalty try, but then dived into the final ruck and gave away a penalty of their own. That allowed Bath to end the game and take the victory.
