Ronan O'Gara scored 24 points as Munster overcame three tries by Perpignan to clinch a crucial victory in Pool One at Thomond Park.

The Munster fly-half kicked seven penalties and a drop goal in a man-of-the-match display that saw the 2008 Heineken Cup champions take a grip on Pool One.

But they were forced to wait until O'Gara's winner six minutes from time to squeeze past the French champions, who lit up Limerick with three tries, including a stunning solo score by full-back Philip Burger that looked to have clinched a vital away win ten minutes from time.

But O'Gara proved the difference and Perpignan were forced to settle for a losing bonus point that may not be enough to see them through to the quarter-finals.

Munster were rocked in the first quarter as they set off to make it 18 out of 18 against French opposition at Thomond Park in the Heineken Cup as the visitors conjured up two tries to snatch the early initiative.

O'Gara may have opened the scoring with his second minute penalty, but the home heroes were on the back foot three minutes later when the French champions' seventh choice back-row, Yoann Vivalda, romped 20 metres to score.

Paul O'Connell stole the Perpignan line-out just outside his 22, but Vivalda poured through on his tap down, won the ball and raced unopposed to the line for the first try of the night.

O'Gara kicked a second penalty only for Perpignan to stun Limerick again with another try, this time through scrum-half Durand.

Guilhem Guirado caught Munster off guard as he tore from a ruck, Vivalda provided the link before Durand left ex-All Black wing Doug Howlett on his heels with a delightful step to touch down for his seventh career try in the Heineken Cup on 12 minutes.

Jerome Porical converted but missed a penalty moments later that allowed O'Gara to level the scores 12-12 with two kicks before half-time as the game settled after such a frantic start.

Munster, under pressure in the scrums, played for territory and the rival kickers traded further penalties early in the second half before O'Gara stroked over a delightful drop goal.

A further penalty gave Munster a six-point advantage for the first time but Perpignan, who lost their previous away tie at Treviso, refused to give in.

Replacement David Mele saw his scuffed first attempt at goal creep over the posts on 65 minutes before Burger scored possibly one of the best individual scores witnessed at this famous ground.

The South African, on as a replacement, caught Paul Warwick's kick outside his own 22-yard line at full pace before setting off on a stunning run. He split three defenders and stepped on the gas from the half-way line to beat Warwick and O'Gara to score in the left-hand corner ten minutes from time.

The try handed Perpignan a two-point lead but Mele missed the conversion from out wide and that left the door open for O'Gara to kick the winner.

Munster surged forward in search of a response and the pressure told when flanker Bertrand Guiry was penalised for a high tackle on Lifeimi Mafi in front of the posts and O'Gara did the rest.

Denis Hurley thought he had sealed the victory only to see his 50-metre try ruled out for an earlier knock-on. However Munster used all their Heineken CUp experience to grind out the final minutes of the clock and clinch an important win.
