Nick Evans
Evans slots the crucial drop goal
Evans steals the show at the Stoop
13 December 2008, 7:59 pm
The fourth round of the Heineken Cup was supposed to be all about a certain New Zealand outside half Dan Carter's debut for Perpignan against Leicester Tigers.
But 24 hours before the All Blacks legend got into the action one of his former rivals for the Kiwi No 10 jersey, Nick Evans, gave him an almost impossible act to follow as he kicked the Harlequins to a spectacular 19-17 Pool 4 victory over Stade Français Paris.

Amid unprecedented scenes at the Twickenham Stoop, Evans rounded off a frantic 29 phase attack by the Quins in injury with a 30 metre drop goal that somehow defied the conditions to limp over the cross bar and secure a famous victory.

Welsh referee Nigel Owens added to the lat gaps drama by consulting his TMO to see if the kick had gone over, but he had no hesitation in confirming what the crowd and the home players felt. And so one of the greatest Pool matches in Heineken Cup history ended in the 84th minute with one of the tournament’s most dramatic finales.

“It is probably the ugliest drop goal I have ever kicked in my life, but over is over. It is in the record books and that’s all that matters,” said Evans.

“The games over the last two weeks are up there in the top give matches I have ever played in during my career.

“It was a bit of a change from last week’ game, but it was great to come home to our fans. This was a big day for the Quins.

“We had to front up and we did just that. There is hug character in this team, we are working hard and we believe in ourselves.

“We didn’t play the territory in the way we wanted to in the first-half, but we showed great composure and patience in the end. There is a good thing going at this club and there is no reason why we can’t go on and win the tournament.”
