Match report
Dan Carter's northern hemisphere debut kicked-off with a man of the match performance as his 16 points spearheaded a first Perpignan victory over Leicester Tigers in the Heineken Cup.

There was a Heineken Cup record crowd of 14,466 at Stade Aime Giral to see the All Blacks legend make his Perpignan debut and the 2005 IRB World Player of the year didn't disappoint the home fans as he hit the mark with six out of eight kicks at goal.

It took just 11 minutes for Carter to start repaying his new employers when he matched a first minute penalty from opposite number Toby Flood.

Three minutes later he stepped up again, this time to stoke over the conversion after playing a part in the game's opening try back row man Gerrie Britz. Scrum half Nicolas Durand weaved his way past four defenders to launch an attack from inside his own half, Carter kept the move alive, Julien Candelon joined in before flanker Britz shrugged of Geordan Murphy to canter over.

Carter converted and then added a penalty following Scott Hamilton's high tackle that left Adrien Plante in need of attention on the floor.

Matt Smith's legitimate challenge on Plante ten minutes later prevented a second Perpignan try, but referee Allan Lewis brought back play for a penalty that Carter dispatched with ease to give the home side a handy 16-3 lead.

The Tigers were struggling, but England back row man Tom Croft handed them a lifeline on the sstroke of half-time when he rounded off a Benjamin Kayser drive into the home 22 with a try that Flood goaled.

That score cut the deficit to six points, although Carter was handed one final kick at goal with the last kick of the first-half. This time, though, he was wayward from the 10 metre line.

There was a second miss at the start of the second half, but it didn't take him long to get back into the groove. A poor clearance attempt by Julien Dupuy from the base of a ruck five metres out from the Tigers line was charged down and Britz pounced on the loose ball to drive over for his second try.

Carter's conversion was the perfect start to the second half for the home side and gave them a 13 point lead just seven minutes into the second half.

The Tigers had to dig deep, and attack from their own half, in order to try to maintain their 100 per cent record in the Pool. Flood's second penalty sparked a revival and then the lively Dupuy scampered away from a penalty to create an opening for Scott Hamilton to stretch through three defenders for a try.

Flood's conversion brought the visitors back to within three points, and into bonus point territory, and they went all out for the win.

But nothing was going to upstage carter on his debut and the packed house saw him land a fourth penalty to crown a successful debut.

Victory for Perpignan means they are now five points behind the Ospreys and Tigers with two games to play. Carter's next Heineken Cup outing will be against the Ospreys at home in Round 5.
