Irish wing Andrew Trimble faces a race against time to be fit for Ulster's Heineken Cup Pool 4 opener against Aironi Rugby after discovering he has a fractured finger.
The 25-year-old dislocated his finger in Ireland's heavy defeat to the All Blacks in New Plymouth in June, but the fracture was only discovered when he returned to training at Ravenhill this week.
Now he will have to undergo an operation to repair the fracture dislocation to the finger on his left hand and is set to miss at least the first month of the newly expanded Magners League tournament and could find himself sidelined for up to 12 weeks.
Capped 29 times by Ireland, Trimble is Ulster's second highest try scorer in the Heineken Cup with 10 tries from 30 outings and is equally at home at centre or wing.
Ulster have the honour with Glasgow Warriors of kicking-off the 15th Heineken Cup campaign at 7.30pm on Friday, 8 October at Ravenhill against the new Italian franchise Aironi Rugby. They are due to travel to Viadana to meet Aironi in the Magners League a few weeks earlier.
The other teams battling with them for a place in the knock-out stages from Pool 4 are last season's runners-up, Biarritz Olympique, and Bath.
