Amlin Challenge Cup winners Cardiff Blues will begin their Heineken Cup campaign with out star centre Jamie Roberts.
The Wales and Lions cap requires surgery on a wrist injury and could miss the first half of the new season.
Roberts suffered the initial damage during the 2009 Lions tour of South Africa but battled back to play a key role as the Blues made history last term.
Dai Young's men were knocked out of the Heineken Cup at the group stages but produced three stunning performances on the road in the Amlin Challenge Cup to become the first Welsh side to win a continental crown.
Roberts was a try scorer in the 28-21 Final win over Toulon in Marseilles, with Young suggesting that the Blues are a very difficult team to beat when their star players are fit and firing.
Although no official timescale has been set for his recovery, Roberts is expected to be unavailable for the opening four rounds of the Heineken Cup as the Blues look to build on last season's European heroics.
"I injured my wrist during the second Test in South Africa last year. I had a couple of MRI scans which unfortunately didn't pick up the injury and it wasn't until the surgeon had a look with a camera into the joint at the end of the season that the full extent of the injury was diagnosed," said Roberts, who has formed an impressive centre partnership with the Blues' New Zealand import Casey Laulala.
"Unfortunately it needs an operation to stabilize the wrist. I played all of last season with a lot of pain in my wrist and so it is logical to get it sorted as soon as possible.
"It's pretty disappointing to be missing more or less the first half of the season, but I will certainly use the time whilst injured to rid my body of any niggles I have and come back to the field in good knick and aim to lift more silverware with the Blues."
Despite his own disappointment at his latest setback, Roberts remains convinced that the Blues can challenge for Europe's top honour in 2010 and 2011.
The Blues have been drawn alongside Northampton Saints, Castres Olympique and Edinburgh in Pool 1 of the Heineken Cup and Roberts believes the Welsh capital-city outfit have enough talent in midfield to ensure they remain in the hunt for qualification by the time he returns to action.
"Obviously the aim for us at the Blues this year is to build on our achievements from last season," added Roberts.
"We certainly have the talent to be successful and I'm sure come the first match the boys will be ready to stamp their mark on what hopefully will be another successful season for us.
"The competition at centre is very strong again this year. Casey Laulala, Tom Shanklin, Dafydd Hewitt and Gavin Evans are all quality players. We'll all have our work cut out for sure and competition for places is certainly healthy amongst us."
