The return of the English clubs meant the tournament expanded again to incorporate 28 teams split into seven Pools of four playing home and away matches. For the first time half of the last eight were non-French, with Ebbw Vale earning a home draw in the quarter-finals. They were joined by Castres Olympique in posting a perfect six from six record in the Pool stages. But while a Thomas Castaignede inspired Castres were able to power past Perpignan and London Irish on their way to a second final, the Steelmen were beaten 21-20 at home by London Irish in the quarter-finals.
Pau, who had dropped only one game in the Pool stages in Perpignan, were too strong for Newcastle in the quarters and then trounced Bristol 51-27 in the semi-final to set-up another all-French final at Les Septs Deniers, in Toulouse. In the final, future French outside half David Aucagne kicked 19 points for Pau to add to their three tries in a comfortable victory.
